TRAVELLING over KHARKIV



   Kharkiv is quite an old city. It was founded in 1654. The city is situated in the north-eastern part of Ukraine at the confluence of the Lopan, Udy and Kharkiv rivers. The area of Kharkiv is over 3000 sq. km. The city is divided into 9 districts.  According to a popular legend the city is named after a Cossack Kharko. Ukrainian Cossaks built a settlement near 350 years ago. Nobody knows for sure how the city got its name. Kharkiv is the historical capital of Slobidska Ukraine.



   With the founding of Kharkiv University in 180 the city became an important educational and cultural center of Ukraine and the Russian Empire. Kharkiv was the capital of Ukraine from 1919 till 1934. Today it is the country's second largest city. About two million people live here. In 1962 the millionth townsman of Kharkiv was born and it become a City-Millionaire.


   Kharkiv is one of the largest industrial centers in Ukraine. You can find planes, tractors, electronics, TV-sets, refrigirators, paints and cosmeyics, made in Kharkiv. The city is first in mechanical engineering, metalworking and electrical power engineering.
     The city is a large cultural and scientific center of Ukraine, second only to Kiev. There are about 200 secondary schools, many gymnasiums, lyceums and 25 univercities and institutes in Kharkiv. There is a Scientific Library, Historical, Art and the Natural Science Museum in Kharkiv. 


   The city has a circus and six professional theatres. 
  Kharkiv is very beautiful especially in spring. There are over 2 500 streets and 26 squares in the city. 





The largest parks are Gorky Park, Shevchenko Garden with the zoo and some others. 








   There most visited place in the city is the zoo. Here you can see many animals, birds, reptiles, insects.
























The city is famouse for a large number of monuments. 



  The most prominent of them is the monument to T.Shevchenko built in 1935, which is the best monument to the poet in the world.


   The galaxy of brilliant names of the world-famed men of arts and science - G.Skovoroda, I.Repin, I. Mechnikov, M. Lysenko, O. Beketov, M. Ostrogradsky, is also part of Kharkiv's glory.
    In 1975 the first line of underground with its eight stations was opened in Kharkiv. The second and third lines were opened in 1984 and 1995. 


    In 1995 Kharkiv got its new emblem. On September 14, 1995, a Session of Kharkiv City Council of the People's deputies asseverated the emblem with the Horn of Planty and the Caduceus on it to be the official city emblem for the third time during the last two hundred years as the one, most exactly reflecting the history of the city and the one, apprehended by the city-dwellers as the symbol of their native city.
